No, seriously. Lick fast.

One summer night when I was about four or five, my dad took us to Baskin-Robbins — my favorite ice cream store in the whole world. It was warm and golden outside, the kind of evening that feels like it was made for ice cream. I chose the seasonal flavor. Peach sherbet, I’m pretty sure — a perfect, glowing orange ball perched on top of my cone like a little sun.

My dad looked at it and said it looked too soft. Maybe I should choose something else.

I insisted.

Two seconds after walking out of the store, that perfectly beautiful orange ball slipped off my cone and landed on the ground by my feet.

I cried.

This painting is dedicated to every scoop that didn’t make it. To every child who chose the soft one anyway. To summer nights and Baskin-Robbins and the particular heartbreak of ice cream that cannot be saved.
