Somewhere between 1957 and 1963, a generation of housewives discovered that Garde Manger — the noble French art of cold food presentation — could be achieved with a box of lime Jell-O and absolutely no restraint whatsoever.
Shrimp? In. Olives? Obviously. Banana slices? Don't be ridiculous — of course.
It was set in a mold, unmolded with ceremony, and placed on the table as if it were the most natural thing on earth. And the family ate it. Because you ate what was put in front of you, and you said thank you.
This painting is a love letter and a gentle roast, all at once — a tribute to the women who cooked with conviction, to the families who ate with confusion, and to a very specific era of culinary chaos that the world will never see again.
